Can ChatGPT Translate for Me? How AI Is Innovating Travel

As someone who (unfortunately) only speaks English, navigating foreign languages is always one of my biggest challenges while traveling. Slyly scrolling through translation apps, taking pictures of menus to upload to Google translate, all while trying desperately not to look like a lost tourist. If you’ve ever been to a country where you don’t speak the language, I’m sure you understand. But I shouldn’t be complaining. We live in the times of artificial intelligence, where we can translate dozens of different languages in a matter of seconds. The rise of AI has transformed so many industries, and travel is no exception. But you might be wondering, “how well can chat gpt translate for me?”.

In this blog post, I’ll share how ChatGPT has changed my travel translation capabilities, how it compares to Google Translate, and why it’s a valuable tool for travel translation!

First, a bit on Google Translate…

Google Translate was my go-to app for translating various languages for years. I’ll never forget how mesmerized I was the first time I used its photo translation function to translate street signs in Jordan. Being able to understand things by just pointing my phone at them–I felt like I had so much power in my hands. Then I remember wondering how people traveled before this kind of technology. Getting a foreign language dictionary, or even human translators to help bridge the language barriers just seemed exhausting. Luckily, we live in an era where technology makes some aspects of our lives so much easier.

But anyone who has ever used Google Translate knows that it’s not perfect, and often gives inaccurate translations. For example, these are some translations I got when using it for my visa application to Uganda:

And sometimes, it will straight up tell you it doesn’t know how to translate what you need:

I won’t pretend to be an expert on the actual technology behind it, but this is because Google Translate relies on literal translation. The app translates words and phrases without considering their specific context. This leads to incorrect (and awkward) results, especially when it comes to complex language. The translations it gave me are funny in hindsight, but they can be frustrating in a real-life situations where you need info quickly.

Google Translate works best for translating individual words or short, commonly used phrases into the target language. Basically, it’s great for asking where the bathroom is, or translating any other simple, specific needs. But it doesn’t always consider the flow or tone of human-like conversations. This is where ChatGPT comes in.

What Can ChatGPT Translate?

So what can ChatGPT translate for you during your travels? Here are just a few examples:

  • Phrases from your native language to the target language
  • Street signs and directions
  • Restaurant menus
  • Slang words and cultural references- try asking it what “pan con mango” means in Peru.
  • Travel documents
    • Although ChatGPT is a great tool to quickly translate documents, always make sure to verify any important official documents with human translation whenever possible.

A lot of the things ChatGPT can do are similar to what translation apps are already capable of. But AI translation tools are now revolutionizing the way travelers communicate abroad.

How ChatGPT translation takes it to the next level

AI technology has made significant developments in recent years. Never in my life did I envision using an AI chatbot to help me have a full conversations overseas. But thanks to the fascinating world of ChatGPT, this once futuristic concept is now a reality for many travelers.  If you haven’t tried using it to translate foreign languages, you’re missing out. ChatGPT’s translation abilities have several advantages over Google Translate when it comes to helping travelers navigate foreign languages.

Contextual Information

Unlike Google Translate, which uses a pre-defined database of words, ChatGPT understands the actual context of sentences. This results in more human-like responses and natural-sounding sentences. ChatGPT also takes into account slang words and culturally specific phrases, so the translation accuracy is usually more appropriate for the situation. Humans are essentially training AI by feeding it real-world information. Therefore, it has access to billions of examples of human conversations, various websites, and a wide variety of texts across different languages. In short, it has learned how humans speak. It’s incredible… and slightly terrifying.

Flexibility

ChatGPT adjusts translations based on your specific needs. For example, if you’re traveling to different parts of a country where dialects differ, it adapts to the local jargon. For example, let’s say you plan to travel across the US, as a non-English speaker. Even if you do speak English, the vernacular greatly differs, depending on what region of the country you are in. Imagine in one state, people are greeting you by saying “good morning” and in the next they are saying “howdy”.  Just tell ChatGPT where you are traveling in the US, and it will  take regional differences into account and give you the cultural connotations of the word/ phrase.

It also eliminates the need to manually switch languages on your translation app. ChatGPT can automatically detect the language based on the input provided. This is really helpful, especially if you’re not entirely sure what language the other person is speaking. For example, in Barcelona, Spanish and Catalan are both spoken widely, and if you don’t speak either, it might be hard to determine which language you need to translate to. ChatGPT takes the guess work out by detecting the language for you.

Human-Like Responses

One of the best ways that ChatGPT has influenced travel is with its ability to generate human-like conversations. Now, they don’t need to feel robotic or overly formal just because you’re using a translator. Instead, it tailors its responses to feel like you’re talking to a real human. You can tell it the context of who you are speaking with, and it will give responses with a corresponding tone.

Real Time Conversations

Picture yourself sitting at a café in Barcelona, and the waiter doesn’t speak English. Instead of inputting sentence after sentence into Google Translate, you can just use ChatGPT’s voice feature to help you in real time. The voice-enabled feature of ChatGPT lets you ask anything and instantly receive the text translation in the target language. It’s like having your own professional translator with you at all times! You can even clarify meanings of specific words, which makes the conversation flow much better. The ability to translate real time conversations is a valuable resource that helps build connection between locals and travelers.

Using ChatGPT to Translate in Real Time

Using ChatGPT to translate in real time is incredibly easy. I would argue that it’s easier to use than Google Translate. Here’s how to use it for conversations next time you travel:

  • Download the ChatGPT mobile app and create an account.
  • Tap the microphone in the text box.
  • Start a conversation in your native language.
    • For example, if you say “How do I say, “where is the library” in Spanish?”, ChatGPT will process what you said, and respond with the translation in both speech and text.

Before you start speaking, you can also give it some context, so that you get the most appropriate responses. Let it know where you are and who your target audience is. For example, you can tell ChatGPT that you’re traveling for a business trip, and need your translations to be very formal. Or that you’re at a local bar, and to use a more casual tone.

As you can see, ChatGPT has simplified the translation process in many ways. If you’re planning a trip and looking for the best translation tool to help you communicate in foreign countries, ChatGPT is worth exploring. It won’t always give the best translation, but the translation quality it gives makes it a powerful tool that offers convenience and versatility during your travels.
